IEEE 1588-2008 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) has become well established as the leading technology for providing frequency, phase and time-of-day synchronisation over packet-based networks. However, deploying PTP-capable equipment in legacy networks can be highly disruptive and a prohibitively expensive upgrade in many cases. Steve Newcombe of Chronos is participating in the Panel Discussion: Time and Timing Distribution for Small Cells at the Small Cells Backhaul Summit at 11:50 hours on 11 June.  Topics include the latest developments in timing standards and what this means for small cells; how timing equipment affects the network architecture; ToD sync methodologies in cellular networks; strategies for delivering ToD accuracy at low cost in LTE and small cell networks.

Chronos’ extensive practical experience in deploying industrial grade GPS systems, traditional synchronisation networks and current research with indoor UTC traceable time using the new eLoran technology has helped us to understand the real challenges operators face as they move to deployment of LTE-A services.  Phase synchronisation between macro and small cells must be achieved if key services such as eICIC and CoMP are to operate effectively and reliably.  Chronos is now offering a new range of services designed to help network operators assess and prepare their networks for these new challenges as they prepare to rollout LTE-A services.

Achieving phase synchronisation between macro and small cells

Phase synchronisation between macro and small cells must be achieved if key services are to operate effectively and reliably.  With over 25 years’ experience in industrial GPS systems and network timing solutions, Chronos has now developed three services to help operators assess and prepare their networks for these new challenges.

PhaseReady™ Design and Test: A consultancy service that has already been deployed in a number of equipment manufacturers helping them prepare their products for the market. The service is tailored to meet the objectives of the client and a recent example was a study of the impact of enabling SyncE to support PTP timing transfer.

PhaseReady™ Core: A service that uses advanced tools to assess the suitability of existing GPS / SSU / Grandmaster system locations to supply phase aligned timing signals into the network for distribution.  In-house developed testing methodologies combined with the use of tools including TimePortTM to ensure the phase performance of key GPS sites is properly engineered.

PhaseReady™ Network: A service that works with network planning and operations teams to assess how best to engineer the sync distribution within the network so that the application performance requirements are met. This service identifies the design decisions and parameters in the network that may or are affecting the delivery of good enough phase to the application that requires it.

Preparing for Phase

Chronos is preparing to attend Alcatel-Lucent’s SReXperts event being held 3-6 June in Prague. Chronos will share with Alcatel’s invited guests its experiences in helping operators, manufacturers and system integrators prepare networks to support Phase. 

As delegates heard at our recent Phase Ready event held in London, Phase is not only required for TDD technology but also for small cell deployment and other applications riding over FDD technology.  Chronos is already supporting operators as they execute active internal projects to make their networks “Phase Ready”.

Chronos has assisted many fixed and mobile operators prepare for supporting frequency synchronisation over Ethernet/IP networks using PTP and now that very same PTP deployment is expected to support the delivery of Phase to the network edge.   Our customers need to determine what is the most efficient, technical and cost-effective way to characterise their current PTP deployment so they can determine what changes, if any, are required to support Phase in their network.

Chronos will demonstrate the engineering and operational tools available to help the vendor selection process, system deployment and the on-going operational support of PTP within networks whether it is to deliver frequency or Phase.

Tim Frost, Principal Technologist with Symmetricom to deliver Network Time Distribution for Small Cells

Small cells pose a particular challenge for synchronization.  Not only are they small, inexpensive devices, they are often indoors, and connected over low grade, low cost access technology.  However, depending on their location, the synchronization requirements of a small cell are similar to those of a macrocell.

This paper looks at the different deployment scenarios for small cell, and the time and frequency accuracy requirements in each case. It addresses the various ways in which time and frequency can be distributed to small cells, including packet-based timing (e.g. PTP), physical layer timing (e.g. SyncE) and satellite timing (e.g. GPS).

Finally, it looks at ways in which each of these can be combined to produce a solution that will work in each of the varied deployment situations that may exist.  Each of these technologies can be used symbiotically to complement the weaknesses of each other, and in some cases to improve the overall performance of the system.   It will also consider the potential architecture for synchronization distribution to allow such complementary operation. The result is a time distribution system of high accuracy and high reliability that can be trusted to support the many revenue-earning and critical applications dependent on accurate time.
